Mite Free is dust mite spray that is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and fully biodegradable. It is scientifically formulated to eliminate dust mites and their eggs. It may also be used a disinfectant however more importantly it works to neutralize or denature the proteins in dust mite excretion that cause the release of histamine in the body and ultimately allergic reactions.
The active ingredient in Mite Free is called Quaternary Ammonium compound (“any of a group of compounds in which a central atom is joined to four organic radicals and one acid radical”). Quarternary ammonium compounds are salts of quaternary ammonium cations with an Quaternary ammonium cations otherwise known as quats are positively charged polyatomic ions of the NR4+ structure(R are alkyl) groups. These cations are permanently charged cations despite the ph of the solution they are in.
The Qa compounds are synthesized by complete alkylation of ammonia or other amines. (Alkylation is the transfer of an alkyl group from one molecule to another.) These salts have many uses and are found in products such as: Shampoos, fabric softeners, antiseptics and even spermicide jellies. A variety of physical, chemical and biological properties can be seen in Qa compounds, most are in fact soluble in water, and concentrations can vary between .005 to 25%. This compound is responsible for the denaturation of the protiens in dust mite feces.
