What is sinus?
Sinus is also known as “par nasal sinuses”; sinuses are grouped air cavities situated along a part of the head bone called the cranial. The sinus comes into contact with the nose and creates a mini network where the mucus will be allowed to drain and the air to pass freely. Most people with sinuses tend to say that, “their nose is blocked,” in reality it is their sinus that is not draining properly.
There are 4 pairs of sinus cavities. Individual sinuses have what we call an ostium/opening which allows for the exchange of air freely. Our mucus walls have fine hairs that trap and move out dirty mucus away from our sinus and it is drained away to the nasal passageways. The biological term for these cells is ciliated epithelium.
So what causes sinus? When the body experiences a disturbance in any of the workings outlined above, sinuses are sure to erupt. Dust for example can disturb the process and is known as the foe of sinus. Smoking and drug abuse have a detrimental effect to our sinus and should be avoide. Smokers tend to have increase sinus congestion in relation to non-smokers and the effect of sinus can be reversed from 20 minutes after the smoker’s last cigarette.
